The West End's Winter Culture Runs on a Weekday Clock

The West End's summer ran on evening tickets: the Benedict Music Tent, the lawn and the walk home after dark. Between the first snow and the February recitals at Harris Concert Hall, its cultural life keeps a different schedule. Much of it is free, all of it sits within a few blocks of Gillespie Avenue, and most of it keeps weekday daytime hours. In winter, the West End's best cultural hours fall on a Tuesday afternoon. Sunday has the least.

The Week Has a Shape

The grid below collects the regular hours posted by the venues on and around the Aspen Meadows campus and Hallam Lake for the weeks ahead.

Day What's open or scheduled
Monday Hallam Lake, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sharing Shakespeare on Nov. 16 and Dec. 14, 6 to 8 p.m.; Wes Bar holiday après, 3 to 5 p.m.
Tuesday Hallam Lake; Bayer Center, noon to 5 p.m., with a 12:30 tour; first-Tuesday birding, 8 to 11 a.m.; Wes Bar après
Wednesday Hallam Lake; Bayer Center; Wes Bar après
Thursday Hallam Lake; Bayer Center with a 12:30 tour; Wes Bar après
Friday Hallam Lake; Bayer Center; Wes Bar après; patio s'mores from Dec. 4
Saturday Bayer Center with a 3 p.m. tour; Wes Bar après; patio s'mores from Dec. 4
Sunday Wes Bar après; patio s'mores from Dec. 4

Two closures shape the whole week. The Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies is closed Sunday and Monday. ACES at Hallam Lake runs Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., from October through May. That leaves Tuesday through Friday as the only days when both are open. On Sunday, the neighborhood's offerings come down to West End Social at Aspen Meadows.

Tuesday Through Saturday at 610 Gillespie

The Bayer Center sits on the southeastern edge of the Aspen Meadows campus, at Gillespie Avenue and North 5th Street, steps from the Benedict Music Tent and Harris Hall. According to its visitor page, it is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m., and admission is free. Free parking is set aside on the south side of the Music Festival parking lot along Gillespie, and the center recommends the Downtowner or the free RFTA Crosstown Shuttle.

The current exhibition, Double Take: Recurrent Dialogues in the Art of Herbert Bayer, opened June 9 and runs through April 3, 2027. In its winter roundup, the Aspen Chamber Resort Association describes the show as tracing recurring motifs across Bayer's paintings, drawings and photographs, with a focus on his Bauhaus-trained approach as a "total artist" in fine art, graphic design and architecture.

Free exhibition tours run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 3 to 4 p.m. Visitors pick a date and register ahead. The center also offers tours of the Aspen Meadows campus. The Tuesday and Thursday tours start just after midday, so they fit a lunch break better than a ski day, and the Saturday 3 p.m. slot is the only weekend option.

Hallam Lake Keeps Office Hours

A few blocks north, at 100 Puppy Smith St., ACES at Hallam Lake is a 25-acre nature preserve and environmental learning center. It was the first location of the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies, and the land was donated in 1968. The preserve is open year-round and has a half-mile loop trail. In winter its posted hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The weekday schedule runs through the programming as well. Winter Birding at Hallam Lake meets on the first Tuesday of each month from 8 to 11 a.m. It costs $25, or $15 for ACES members, and registration closes at 5 p.m. the day before. The remaining sessions in the ACES booking system are:

  1. Tuesday, Dec. 1
  2. Tuesday, Jan. 5
  3. Tuesday, Feb. 2
  4. Tuesday, March 2
  5. Tuesday, April 6

For families, ACES has scheduled Olaf Visits Hallam Lake for Tuesday, Dec. 8, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. The event is free and includes hot chocolate, crafts and an outing to feed the animals. Like the birding mornings, it falls on a Tuesday.

Monday Night Is Shakespeare Night, Once a Month

The one regular evening program in the West End this winter also falls on a weekday. The Aspen Institute's Sharing Shakespeare is in its 22nd year, and this season the group is reading Measure for Measure in a six-month series. Sessions run Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. The first met Oct. 19, and the rest fall on:

  • Nov. 16 and Dec. 14 in 2026
  • Jan. 11, Feb. 8 and March 8 in 2027

The group meets at Aspen Meadows, 1000 N. Third St. According to the Institute's series page, the series costs $195, which covers all sessions, refreshments and reading materials, and scholarships are available. The Nov. 16 session covers Act II. The Bayer Center is closed on Mondays, and the Institute fills that evening once a month.

The Weekend Belongs to the Meadows

On Saturdays and Sundays, Aspen Meadows Resort carries most of what happens in the West End, and most of it takes place at its restaurant, West End Social. The resort's event calendar lists holiday après cocktails at the Wes Bar daily from 3 to 5 p.m. through Jan. 4. Starting Dec. 4, s'mores are served on the West End Social patio every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 4:30 to 7 p.m. through Jan. 3. After that date, Sunday has more than one thing on the calendar.

The calendar also lists a handful of single-date events through New Year's:

  • Thanksgiving dinner, Thursday, Nov. 26, 2 to 8 p.m., in the West End Social dining room
  • Menorah lighting, Dec. 4, 4:45 to 5:45 p.m., in the resort lobby, led by local members of the Aspen community
  • Winter Wonderland and Makers Market, Saturday, Dec. 19, 2 to 6 p.m., at the Walter Isaacson Center: free, with local makers, live music, photos with Santa and treats
  • Five Courses to the New Year, Dec. 31, 5 to 9 p.m., a tasting menu at West End Social with an optional wine pairing

The Dec. 19 market is the West End's only large free weekend event before the holidays. It opens an hour before the Bayer Center's 3 p.m. Saturday tour and keeps going for an hour after the gallery closes at 5.

The resort is also expanding its winter family offerings. According to the Chamber's winter release, Aspen Meadows now provides complimentary snowshoes for exploring its 40 acres, plus snowman-building kits.

At the other end of the neighborhood, at the corner of Main and Garmisch, White Elephant Aspen is heading into its first ski season after opening June 15. Its restaurant, Lola 41, is at 110 W. Main St. It focuses on seafood and sushi from places along the 41st parallel, and the Chamber lists it alongside a new lounge, 41 Below, as part of the hotel's winter debut.

When the Evening Calendar Comes Back

The West End's evening programs return in stages, and the dates are already set.

The first date to note is Dec. 11. According to the Chamber's winter release, that is when tickets go on sale for the Aspen Music Festival and School's Winter Music Recital Series at Harris Concert Hall. All three recitals start at 6:30 p.m.:

  1. The Isidore Quartet, Monday, Feb. 15
  2. Violinist Benjamin Beilman and pianist Steven Osborne, Tuesday, March 2
  3. Pianist Jeremy Denk, Friday, March 12

These recitals also fall mostly on weekdays, two of the three. Across Gillespie Avenue, the Aspen Center for Physics at 700 W. Gillespie St. holds its free DeWolf winter public lectures on select Wednesdays. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the lectures begin at 5:30.

Wintersköl begins the night before the recital ticket sale. Aspen's "toast to winter" turns 75 this year and runs Dec. 10 through 13. The Chamber says the anniversary edition adds a drone show marking both the 75th year and Colorado's 150th. Aspen Meadows lists the Dec. 10 activities at Wagner Park. The Bayer Center's Double Take exhibition runs until April 3, 2027, three weeks after the Denk recital.
